Moonrise Cottage
 |
We first learned of Moonrise
Cottage doing an internet search for Bahamian rental houses.
The web site described Moonrise as a tranquil, secluded, natural,
quiet retreat in tune with nature on a small island in the Sea of
Abaco. We found the house to be everything in its web description
and more. While Moonrise doesn't offer deluxe luxury accomodations,
it is very comfortable, quaint, quiet, and private.
|
The house reminded me of the Walt Disney movie Swiss Family Robinson.
The best way to truly describe Moonrise Cottage is with the following
pictures.
 |
Here we are approaching Moonrise Cottage on the northeastern
side of Lubbers Quarters Cay (click
here for a map of Lubbers Quarters Cay) . The cottage
consists of two buildings, the main house on the right and the bedroom,
or "snore-box" on the left. Both were up on stilts and
were set back a bit from the water and nestled in the trees.
The house had a natural colored exterior making the house blend
in with the surroundings instead of contrasting with it. The private
dock is straight ahead.

Here we've tied our rental boat up to the private dock.

It's just a short walk up to the house.
Don't forget to ring the "door bell".

Here's a full view of the main house. The
"snore box" is just off the photo to the left.
|
From anywhere in the house or on the porch you
could look out over the Sea of Abaco towards Elbow Cay. We'd
eat our breakfasts outside on the white table.

Here's the outdoor shower, located under the
porch. All around you are plants,
driftwood and seashells. The flush toilet is located in
another room.

Above is a 180 deg panorama as you step into
the main house which is basically one room, with a kitchen/eating
area to the left and a living area to the right. The stove
and refrigerator are both gas operated. The electrical system
is battery operated and re-charged during the day by solar panels.

Behind the house is a 5 minute path thru the
woods which leads to your own private beach on the other side
of the island. We didn't spend much time here. We
were usually out boating everyday. We came here several
evenings for the beautiful sunsets off to the west.

The Bananaquits and Woodpecker were always present, looking
for a free handout. We put out sugar, grape jelly, and or
pancake syrup for them every morning. When we came back from
boating at the end of the day, the plate always looked like
it had been licked clean ! I hope somebody else is feeding them
everyday, now that I'm not there !
We also had other visitors like the 6 inch long Bahamian Curly-Tailed
Lizard shown below.
