This trip to the Canadian Rockies was to be subtitled “In Search of the Northern Lights”. This year (2000) was a peak year in the 11-year cycle for solar activity. Unfortunately, we picked a two-week period when there was a full moon and the first week in Jasper it was overcast most evenings. Several evenings, Diane got up in the middle of the night and sat outside in the sub-freezing temperature with her sleeping bag wrapped around her hoping to catch some northern lights activity. Unfortunately, the phenomenon is a random occurrence and we just missed out on this trip. However, we still enjoyed this trip immensely and rank it amongst our favorites. We hiked every single day of the trip.
